We already know that Google has tightened control on how it perceives the quality of a websites and it’s trustworthiness with the now updated and not so friendly Panda algorithm. The next update of great importance is known as the Penguin algorithm. It was designed to give penalties to any sites which are caught engaging in spam indexing. Spam indexing or spam back linking is when a site uses cheap back link farms or deals on various websites found online which offer thousands of low quality back links for a cheap price to low quality sites. These are known as black hat SEO tactics and also include keyword stuffing, URL redirections and some other shady practices Google doesn’t condone.
Now for the Bad News
There are thousands of sites online which are now going to be given penalties for what Google now considers un-natural link building but once had no issues with. Let’s look into it further.
When you hear the term link building profile it refers to the collection of any hyper-links which are pointing to your website. Links are still one of the primary currencies in the online world of search and with the Penguin update Google’ search bots have become even more intelligent at locating and detecting any attempts to fool the system. What it comes down to is any attempt at link building using the same few target keywords as the anchor text will be penalized by Google.
What does Google look at as natural than? It’s next to impossible to know the truth and the internet giant will never divulge its secrets. But if you aim to give an even distribution of different links with various anchor text like the following you should be OK.

Naked Link URL
This is a link URL which includes one of the following URLs – “SiteName.com” and “http://www.SiteName.com. You’re link distribution should be around 22% of this link type.
Brand Name Link
To keep a natural look, about 26% of your link totals should be made with your brand name or company name. In example – “YourCompanyName” as the anchor text which should be more numerous than keyword type links.
Keyword Links
Specifically targeted keyword links are anchor text consisting of keywords you’re trying to rank for on the search engines. An example of this is when you sell used cars in New York. The keyword link would then be – “New York used cars” or something similar.
Non-Descriptive Links
This is the commonly seen “click here” and “visit site here.” Your site should only consist of about 29% of these non-descriptive type links.
